The successful Turkish War of Independence led by Ottoman general Mustafa Kemal Atatürk against the occupying Allies led to the emergence of the Republic of Turkey in the Anatolian heartland and the abolition of the Ottoman monarchy.

After the Ottomans were defeated during the war, the victorious Allies partitioned the empire in 1919, with only the boundaries of modern-day Turkey remaining under Ottoman control. It entered World War I on the sides of the Central Powers ( Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria), participating in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Mesopotamian Campaign during the war, among other fronts. Hoping to escape from it's diplomatic isolation, the Ottomans formed an alliance with Germany in the early 20th century. The Ottoman Empire ( Modern Turkish: Osmanlı İmparatorluğu Ottoman Turkish: Devlet-i ʿAlīye-i ʿOsmānīye "دَوْلَتِ عَلِيّهٔ عُثمَانِیّه") was an empire founded in 1299 that controlled much of Asia Minor, Balkans and the majority of the Levant.
